The #8 Turquoise mine in Eureka County north of Carlin Nevada was discovered in 1925 and first mined in 1929 until its depletion. The mine was closed as a result of the discovery of gold in 1976 when the Newton Gold Company claimed the area. In its prime, the Number 8 mine produced some of the largest nuggets of turquoise ever found. This Turquoise is a Cushion-Shaped Cabochon Cut. Cabochon refers to a gemstone that has been shaped and highly polished instead of being faceted. This turquoise is in PERFECT PRISTINE CONDITION absolutely free of any chips, nicks, cracks or scratches. We sell quite a few Ostby & Barton rings and most have an "OB" hallmark or an "OB" with a maltese cross. We found that the "OSBEE" hallmark is a rarely seen later period Ostby & Barton hallmark. We found this label on the bottom of an Ostby & Barton store counter display. (See photo #11) The label says "OS BEE Quality Rings Since 1879 Ostby & Barton Providence RI" We matched this hallmark to a 1940's catalog to date the period. The interior of the ring is also fully hallmarked with the maker's mark of "OsBee" which is the hallmark for Ostby & Barton an extremely collectible and sought after vintage brand. Ostby & Barton, Providence R.I. The business was established in 1879 by Englehart C. Ostby and Nathan B. Barton. Ostby perished in the Titanic disaster while his daughter Helen made it to a lifeboat and survived. The company went on to become one of the most famous jewelry companies in the world. Ostby & Barton Jewelry is now an extremely collectible and highly sought after vintage brand. The dark areas on the gold in the photos are not blemishes but shadows and reflections due to the difficulty in photographing the highly polished gold. The darker oil slick look in the side details is the natural patina of the ring that only comes with age. If you would like us to polish the ring further to remove this patina just let us know, it is no problem at all. This ring is a classic ring was made using the stamping method common in that era. This ring is fully hallmarked "10k" and tests as and is guaranteed to be 10k Solid Gold. (Again this ring is guaranteed to be Solid Gold not plated or layered) This ring is in EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION will arrive ready to wear.
